More Than a Salt Company: The Historic Legacy Behind Texas Salt Co.

More Than a Salt Company: The Historic Legacy Behind Texas Salt Co.

Every jar has a story. Ours started more than 170 years ago.

When visitors step through the doors of Texas Salt Co. in Bandera, they're usually greeted by the smell of smoked seasonings, fresh samples, and a warm Texas welcome.

What many don't realize is they're also stepping onto one of the oldest pieces of commercial history in Bandera.

Our home at 304 11th Street has witnessed generations of Texas history, from frontier settlers and courthouse gatherings to hardware stores, western trading posts, and now handcrafted Texas-made seasonings. As recently featured in The Historian Quarterly Circular by the Bandera County Historical Commission, this corner of Bandera has helped shape the story of our town for more than a century and a half.

Where Bandera Began

Long before Texas Salt Co. filled shelves with smoked salts and seasonings, this land was part of Bandera's earliest settlement.

In the early 1850s, pioneer P.D. Saner helped establish what would become Bandera by building homes, businesses, and one of the area's first commercial industries—splitting cypress trees into roofing shingles. The intersection of Cypress and Eleventh Streets quickly became an important part of the growing community, serving as a center for commerce and everyday life.

Over the decades, floods reshaped downtown, streets were relocated, businesses came and went, but this corner continued serving the people of Bandera.

A Building with Texas Character

The building that now houses Texas Salt Co. was constructed in the 1940s and has worn many hats through the years.

It operated as Squeaky's Body Shop during Bandera's post-war boom before becoming home to Pearl Trading Company, a beloved western shop known throughout the Hill Country. Each chapter added another layer to the history of this landmark.

Today, those same walls tell a new story.

Instead of repairing vehicles or selling western antiques, they're filled with handcrafted smoked salts, seasonings, gourmet foods, and products proudly made right here in Bandera, Texas.

Preserving History While Building Something New

At Texas Salt Co., we believe heritage isn't something you leave behind—it's something you build upon.

That's why we continue producing our seasonings in small batches, smoking many of our products over real Texas hardwoods, and hand-packing every jar with the same care that's defined our company from the beginning.

The history of this property reminds us that craftsmanship never goes out of style.

More Than Just One Building

The story of Texas Salt Co. extends beyond our storefront.

Just down the block at 1107 Cypress Street, you'll find Salty's Texas Provisions, another chapter in the ongoing history of this historic corner of Bandera.

The building has served many purposes throughout its lifetime, including as Gunslinger, a popular western clothing store owned by Melissa Benge. Today, Salty's Texas Provisions carries that same Texas spirit forward with a thoughtfully curated collection of Texas-made foods, artisan products, books, bowls, jams, and Hill Country specialties. As the article notes, it feels like a natural evolution—from the hardworking trades that helped build Bandera to a modern celebration of Texas craftsmanship and flavor.

Together, Texas Salt Co. and Salty's Texas Provisions continue a tradition that's been alive on this corner for generations: creating a place where visitors can experience authentic Texas products, genuine hospitality, and the enduring spirit of Bandera.

Proud to Be Part of Bandera's Story

We don't simply occupy this historic building—we're proud to preserve its legacy for future generations. Every improvement we make is done with respect for the history and character that have defined this corner of Bandera for more than 170 years. As caretakers of a place with such deep roots in the Cowboy Capital of the World, we're committed to honoring its past while continuing to write its next chapter. Every customer who walks through our doors becomes part of that story.

Whether you're stopping in for a tasting, picking up your favorite smoked seasoning, or staying next door at The Salt Block, you're experiencing more than a local business—you're experiencing a piece of Texas history that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.

Some stories are written in books.

Others are built into the walls.

We're proud to carry this one forward.
